After facing a string of box office failures Rocking Star Manchu Manoj comes before the audiences in his latest venture “Gunturodu” determined to score a hit this time around. The film is a complete mass entertainer and commercial pot boiler directed by SK Sathya with Pragya Jaiswal playing his heroine. Rajendra Prasad, Kota Srinivasa Rao and Sampath play important roles in the film. Right from the beginning the film has been raising the expectations of the industry and trade circles. The first look poster, teaser and trailer only added to the hype and raised the expectations even further. Let us see if the film matches those expectations and hype.
Manoj is a complete wastrel and idler. His father hopes to see him turn over a new leaf and becoming something in life, but is constantly disappointed by Manoj who focuses on enjoying life with his friends. One day Manoj sees Pragya Jaiswal in a market area and falls in love with her at first sight. He then begins to woo her and somehow wants to win her love too. Along the way he somehow earns the wrath of Sampath, a local rowdy-sheeter whose henchmen come after him now. The conflicts between Sampath and Manoj start off from then. The whole story revolves around who is Sampath; what is the connection between him and Pragya Jaiswal; what did Manoj do to earn the wrath of the rowdy-sheeter; will Manoj succeed in winning the lady’s affections.
The director has added all the ingredients that go to making a commercial pot boiler out of “Gunturodu”. Comedy, family drama, romance, a love story and finally complete mass action scenes – all are aplenty in the film. The first half is all about how Manoj keeps playing the fool along with his friends and how he meets and falls in love with Pragya Jaiswal. Some of his jokes, though dirty, do raise a laugh.
Even his attempts to woo the heroine raise a laugh. The bang before the interval is the highlight of the film. The second half is full of action scenes between the hero and the villain. There are no major twists and turns in the plot but the conflicts between the hero and villain are quite interesting and thrilling. The songs are all well timed and nice to hear and ending of the film is good though the climax itself is quite routine.
Performance of the stars:
Manchu Manoj looks every inch the Mass action hero in the film. The intensity that he shows through his eyes is really excellent. He succeeds in impressing the audience doing complete justice to his role. He actually carries the entire movie on his shoulders with his intense performance. Pragya Jaiswal not only looks beautiful and glamorous but also acts very well and Rajendra Prasad as the father of Manoj proves his talent once again with his comedy timing. Sampath plays the bad guy very well. Kota Srinivas Rao appears on the screen after a long time and shows his mastery within the limits of his role. His punch dialogues were really good. All other artistes were adequate.
Performance of the Technical Team:
Cinematography by Siddharth Ramaswamy was excellent. Every frame has its own grandeur. Almost Music by DJ Vasanth was good and background score was excellent especially during the fight sequences. Karthik Srinivas has done a good job as the editor. Varun Atluri did not compromise on the production values. In addition The director chose a tried and tested story but presented it very differently. Some of the scenes were a drag but in totality he gives us a mass entertaining and enjoyable film.
